enjoy the quick, simple install!!

VirtualBox

Submitted by nomasteryoda on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 07:55.

I've been using VirtualBox from Sun (Sun recently purchased VirtualBox from Innotek) for over a year now and have not even looked back at using VMware worksation, of which I own 2 copies.

VirtualBox allows you to run Windows, Linux, BSD, DOS right on top of your Linux desktop. It supports importing vmware vmx images - virtual machines you might have created in vmware server (free version) or vmware workstation.

There are 2 flavors of VirtualBox to choose from. One is the OSE version available in Ubuntu or Debian package repositories. To check if it exists in your package list, type "sudo apt-cache search virtualbox" in a Terminal window. Follow any instructions provided.

SSH Key Authentication Using seahorse (GUI)

To simplify use of ssh key pairs on your computers, no matter the network you are on, Seahorse is the way to go!

Just follow this howto at www.debianadmin.com and you can manage your ssh keys in no time flat. Sure, cli is simple enough, but for new users this is almost foolproof.

ANY Partitioning...

Submitted by nomasteryoda on Tue, 11/13/2007 - 15:14.

This is a tip for all those poor souls who dare repartition their nice Linux drive... BACKUP THAT SUCKER SOME PLACE SAFE!!! Yea I'm yelling that out to the world. You can never be to careful with your valuable data. Spending hours upon hours to recover using some nice windows utility is not fun. Believe me when I say this.... please.

.... yea, did not follow my own advice.

Anyway, the tool I found and had forgotten about is called R-Linux and its free... Yeah, free is very good when you have dorked up your data. Check it out at: www.data-recovery-software.net

Hey all!!

Check out a hot little contest from Pearson Education/InformIT.

Just click to register EACH month and get chance to win cool prizes!!! No, really. These guys sponsor the books we review. Spend 1 minute completing the entry form and I'm sure you'll be happier. Heck, do it in Firefox and let it save the form field data so you can just complete it quicker next time.

If you have the hardware, this really is a great way to show off what Linux can do vs the other 2 popular OSs.

Here's a video of some of the coolness.

Yes, you can download the Linux version here too. The main reason you might want to visit the site are to see cool new features. When possible and available, And, though the install process is relatively painless, I recommend installing the version your Distribution of Linux provides in its repositories. The downside? There is none if you have Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, then you can grab the latest version today!
