Going 64-bit or not? That is the question.
Happy New Year and all that stuff!
Blaming Dell, Ubuntu 9.10 released Oct, and my laptop experiences with it.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted much more than the meeting notices, but here goes nothing.
Have you wondered if installing the 32-bit or 64-bit version of your favorite Linux distro onto that new 64-bit Desktop or Laptop would make a difference? Well the people at Phoronix have the results of their benchmarks posted. After their extensive testing the winner is??? 64-bit!
If you have a system with a 64-bit CPU, go right ahead and do a fresh install. Wait, how do you know you have such a system? You can run a simple command to tell - lshw -C cpu” from any terminal. If the “width” parameter says 64, then you have a 64-bit system.
Be sure to backup your /home to an external device - just in case and any other oddball partitions you might have setup, though most users only setup /, /home and a swap.
Enjoy!
