Ubuntu 8.10 released!!
Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download yourself a copy today!
This version might just be the best yet. I have relied on Sidux for several months now and installed the last daily build (dated 10/28/2008) on a clean partition in my Dell Inspiron 8600. I must say I am awestruck at some of the new features.
The good:
- Connecting PDA smartphones just works with USB (from what I read with bluetooth as well).
- I’ve uploaded files to my cellphone via bluetooth before, and the Palm Treo 750 worked even easier.
- Biggest of all, I hooked the USB up and it automatically created a new Auto eth2 device… and I clicked the connect button on the PDA to hooked it up to the web… wow!!
- Building your own USB bootable of Ubuntu has never been easier… just click the System, Administraton, “Create a USB startup disk” and follow directions.
The so-so:
- Compiz Configuration Settings Manager (CCSM) is NOT installed by default.
- Neither is Emerald themes for compiz AND there are no themes in the repos when you install it…
fortunately I keep my themes numbered for just such occasions… copied them from my sidux parition and now I can make this box look like I want. - A button should have been dropped on the desktop or some place to let the user know to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras for stuff like Flash, full Java support as well as media codecs.
more later…
